Domani e il giorno dopo // Berlin

A shot-for-shot remake of the last scene in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1962 film L’Eclisse. Digital video. ORT 9 min 34 sec.

A couple makes up and promises to see each other tomorrow and the next day. The young woman steps out of the apartment and has a moment of clarity; you can see that she’s decided she’s never going back to him again, and she propels herself into the city. I was drawn to the way this scene depicts broken inertia, a moment of decisiveness, and inescapable histories. I chose to set my remake in Berlin, a city that rhymes with Antonioni’s film in many ways. The melancholic aura, and especially the fascist-era architecture that echoes the area where Antonioni filmed in the E.U.R. district on the outskirts of Rome.
