Michael Marfione
As a lens-based artist, Michael Marfione explores the relationships between masculinity, memories, and place.
Marfione’s work reflects his life journey, having been born in America, raised in Italy, and returning to America. Marfione honed his skills through studies at St. John’s University and the International Center of Photography, culminating in his M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Joshua Mosley, Terry Adkins, and Matthew Ritchie.
Recently, Marfione has been repurposing personal travel photographs into sculptural relics, transforming them into almost archaeological artifacts.
It’s an act of adding context to what would otherwise remain two-dimensional touristic photography, alluding to deeper histories and meanings through form and shape.
Marfione’s accolades include being selected as a finalist for the Tristate Italian Art Prize in 2023, receiving the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship in 2011, and being included in the group show “Coming Together,” curated by Phong Bui. He currently lives and works in New York.
